Will putting a different charger into my laptop kill my laptop completely?

I have an HP Pavilion dv408nr laptop and my charger was recently broken. I ordered another charger that was for dv6000 series and was working fine and now my laptop won’t stay on or it will stay on for maybe 1 minute and then cut off. So I was wondering, could it be that my battery’s dead? Or by using a different charger it killed my battery? Or is my laptop completely unusable now? Because I have alot of information on their I can’t afford to lose. SO SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME OUT! Thanks.

If its not working while plugged in then something is wrong. I went through 2 chargers with my laptop in 2 years and for each replacement I bought a universal one from Office Max. My actual battery is completely shot so I can’t use my laptop if its not plugged in but the universal charger works perfectly fine. It set me back $100 each time before I saw that the original charger can be bought online for $36! Try calling HP and asking them personally if you can’t figure out the problem.

Why are you not to use a Dual Wattage Converter with electronic circuity eg. a battery charger?

I just bought a Samsonite Wattage Converter/Adapter Plug Kit for the express purpose of being able to charge my ipod when I am travelling to a counry that uses 220V. I now have read the fine print: WARNING: Do not use with electronic circuitry ie. computers, TVs, battery chargers.
