I am looking to buy a few 6 volt lantern batteries and wires with aligator clips on them but i am having no joy wherever i look. Anyone familiar with these purchases?

How many amps does a 6v latern battery contain? Does it change whren there are two?

Battery capacities are rated in Ampere-Hours (Ah), which is how many hours it can supply a one-amp load until it is depleted. But because your load may be more or less than one ampere, the battery life will be less or more. To find out how long the battery will last in your application, you need to know how much power (either watts or amps) your lantern uses.

Check the data sheets for the type of 6v battery you are using, and find the number of ampere-hours (milliampere-hours or mAh are 1/1000 of an Ampere-hour). Here are some sites for finding data about batteries:

(the second one is to cross-reference other brands of battery to energizers — or you can look for the battery you are using on the web).

For example, the Energizer 510 lantern battery (6-volt) data sheet is here:

It shows this battery to have a capacity of 11 Ah to 0.8V per cell (the point at which a battery is generally considered dead).

Now lets say you are using that in a 12-watt lantern. You take the wattage (12) divided by the voltage (6) to determine that the current is 2 amperes. If your lantern already said on it somewhere how many amperes (A, or Amps) or milliamperes (mA — again, 1/1000th of an Ampere) it uses, you would have just used that value and not worry about converting watts into amps. Anyway,

You then take the capacity of the battery (11 Ah) and divide by the current (2 Amperes) to determine the life of the battery (5.5 hours).

If you hook up two lantern batteries in parallel (+ to + and – to -), they still output 6 volts but will last twice as long because only half as much current is needed from each battery to achieve the full current of the load (think of it as two hoses filling the same bucket). Alternately, they can produce twice as much amperage as a single battery (same number of amps times two batteries).

If you hook the two batteries up in series (+ of one to – of the other, and the load connected to the unused + and – terminals), they will produce 12 volts at the same current and as a result will last the same time as just 1 battery. Of course, the lantern has to be a 12-volt type in this case (putting 12V into a 6V lantern will burn it out almost instantly).
