I have a energizer family charger and was wondering if i could use duracell batteries in the charger

Only recharge batteries labeled as "rechargeable."

Any recharger that holds the battery will work.

Some chargers are better than other chargers, but any brand charger can work with any brand battery.

Is there a difference between coppertop and alkaline duracell batteries? Does coppertop just refer to the copper band on the outside of the battery?

There is no difference. You are correct when the term "coppertop" refers to the copper band on top.
